A Victor, In Love

A Victor, In Love
I painted a figure in gouache directly onto a scrapbook page assembled in 1880 by a young German immigrant living in West Virginia.
Clara Bleckschmidth’s careful clippings form the foundation of this work — what inspired her then continues to inspire me now. The figure stands in a posture of triumphant resolve, strong and unmistakably heroic. As her silhouette interacts with the antique collage beneath, it takes on the quality of winged armor, positioning her as both muse and victor, grounded in history yet newly imagined.
