Gouache on Civil War–era patriotic card (c. 1861), float-mounted in a black gallery frame with gold trim

This work is painted atop a small Civil War–era card depicting an eagle guarding her nest beneath the phrase: “Live & Die for those we Love.” The original imagery is about devotion, sacrifice, and protection. In this reinterpretation, the banner obscures the figure’s eyes, transforming the original slogan into something more conflicted. The work considers the ways love can become surrender — the tension between devotion and self-erasure, protection and sacrifice.
