Live & Die

Live & Die
Gouache on Civil War–era patriotic card
Historical Context
This work is painted atop a small Civil War–era card depicting an eagle guarding her nest beneath the phrase: “Live & Die for those we Love.” The original imagery reflects the era’s ideals of devotion, sacrifice, and protection.
Artist’s Note
In this reinterpretation, the banner obscures the figure’s eyes, transforming the original slogan into something more conflicted. The work considers the ways love can become surrender — the tension between devotion and self-erasure, protection and sacrifice.
