A Soft Body

A Soft Body
This original work is painted directly onto Development of a Naked Mollusc, a scientific lithograph printed in 1858 in the UK and France. The substrate’s dark study of early life — embryonic forms suspended in inked water — serves as both material and conceptual foundation for the figure.
Molluscs are defined, in part, by their soft bodies. That physical quality informed the pose of the figure, whose form appears to settle into the composition rather than sit atop it, as if discovered within the paper’s existing logic.
This piece is part of an ongoing body of work exploring the figure on antique scientific and academic materials, where historical study and contemporary painting meet.
The artwork measures 7 × 8 inches and has been matted in black linen within a gold-rimmed frame. Final framed dimensions are 12 × 15 inches. Arrives framed and ready to hang.
