Marianne
Marianne
Marianne is a symbol of liberty in France. A feminine icon symbolizing the citizens’ attachment to a republican France, Marianne is an emblem of liberty, fraternity, and equality. Many painters and sculptors have portrayed her, and this particular stamp was designed by Albert Decaris and engraved by Jules Piel and issued from 1960-1965.
Since 1935, Marianne has appeared on many commemorative postage stamps, and since the liberation of France, in 1944, stamps bearing her image are called “Mariannes.”
Eighty stamps make up the “canvas” of this piece. I was inspired by what the woman who posed for this stamp might have looked like — and how they might have cropped her for the postage :)
The artwork measures approximately 6 in. x 9 in. Framed, this pieces measures 10.5 in. x 13 in. This painting ships framed and ready to hang.
